ON Semiconductor has introduced a 2 watt
(W) dual output DC-DC converter NCP5810 that provides both positive and
negative output voltages. The device's accurate output voltage, high switching
frequency and small package make it ideal for powering display drivers for
active matrix organic light-emitting diodes (active matrix OLED or AMOLED)
panels for emerging display technologies in portable applications.
Manor Narayanan, vice president and general
manager of ON Semiconductor's Digital and Consumer Products Division, said:
"The NCP5810 provides an advantage for AMOLED's power supply. ON
Semiconductor is committed to designing devices to meet their specific needs.
The NCP5810 is this collaboration. A successful example, it has been selected
by leading display manufacturers to power the new AMOled display for ultra-thin
portable multimedia devices and is in volume production."
Active
matrix OLED, the latest display technology, although only a small number of
display manufacturers will be mass-produced this year and next, it provides
better color contrast and video playback quality than current LCD display
technology, but also Add power management challenges to design engineers. For
example, given that AMOLED displays are sensitive to changes in supply voltage,
ON Semiconductor designed the NCP5810 to provide an accurate feedback voltage
with only 1% voltage tolerance and fast line transient response, and an input
voltage fluctuation of 500 millivolts (mV). When the transient overshoot
voltage is only 4 mV.
With an overall power efficiency of up to
85% at 1.75 MHz (MHz) oscillator frequency, the NCP5810 dual output DC-DC
converter provides the industry's best performance. To complement the slim
profile of the AMOLED display, the converter can be converted to a high
frequency of 1.75 MHz, using smaller inductors and ceramic output capacitors.
Its 0.55 mm thick ultra-thin package allows the NCP5810 to be used in the
thinnest portable product design. In addition, its power-down function in
shutdown mode limits the leakage display current to 1 microamperes (uA), saving
battery power in the off state. The NCP5810 also features cycle-by-cycle peak
current limiting and thermal shutdown protection.
Package and price
The NCP5810 is available in an ultra-thin
3.0 mm x 3.0 mm x 0.55 mm LLGA-12 package and is priced at $1.20 per unit in
3,000-piece quantities.
In addition to providing samples for the
NCP5810 device with a fixed converter output voltage, AMD Semiconductor also
offers samples of the adjustable version of the NCP5810A in the same package.
