The JPEG baseline compression method is based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). The DCT is performed on 8x8 blocks of samples for each color component, resulting in 64 DCT coefficients for each block. To compress a normal raster-scanned image, it must first be converted to block format by storing an 8-line strip of the image in a strip buffer for re-ordering the samples . After the DCT, the 64 coefficients of each block are further re-ordered in a zig-zag sequence and quantized using values from a quantization table.
