According to Omdia's latest report, the global semiconductor market is expected to decline 5 percent by 2020, excluding memory IC.Global revenue for the entire market, including storage, will reach $439.3 billion by 2020, up 2.5 percent from a year earlier. In 2019, it was $428.5 billion. This is a marked reduction from Omdia's previous forecast of 5.5 per cent growth this year

"With increasing concerns about the impact of coronavirus on the global economy, Omdia has significantly reduced its semiconductor forecasts," said Myson Robles-Bruce, a semiconductor value chain research analyst at Omdia.

He continued: "With Japan already in recession and economists expecting the US and Europe to enter recession in the second quarter, demand is weak in every region and almost every market. The pandemic has had a negative impact on supply chains and market demand in all its components."

Medical semiconductors will grow even faster from now on

According to the report, the medical electronics semiconductor market will grow from $5.6 billion in 2019 to $6 billion in 2020.The ventilator market will reach $4.6 billion in revenue this year, up 71% from $2.7 billion in 2005.2019

The main growth driver for medical semiconductors will be ventilators used to treat patients with coronavirus.Global shipments of ventilators are expected to reach 691,840 units this year, up 60% from 430,843 units in 2019

"Medical ventilators have been in use for more than 70 years. In that time, they have evolved from simple electromechanical designs to complex electronic control systems with multiple microcontrollers, brushless DC motor controllers, touch screen interfaces and USB or wireless connections. So these devices will drive a lot of semiconductor consumption as shipments increase to meet the coronavirus challenge in 2020."Paul Pickering, senior analyst at Omdia Industrial Semiconductors

Growth will outpace that of the entire industrial semiconductor market

Driven by long-term trends such as population aging, increasing use of telemedicine, the shift to portable and wearable devices, and the rise of mobile medicine, the growth of the medical semiconductor sector will continue to exceed the overall industrial semiconductor market in 2021 and beyond.Artificial intelligence (AI).

"Covid-19 is rapidly reallocating priorities and funding in the health sector. The consequences are both immediate, with increased demand for medical ventilators and surgical supplies, and indirect, with an increase in telemedicine due to the postponement or cancellation of routine appointments.
