News from May 13 The latest report points out that thanks to the economic recovery brought by the release of new 5G smartphones, machine vision and more embedded cameras, sales of CMOS image sensors will hit a new high in 2025.

With the global outbreak of the new crown virus, the CMOS image sensor (CIS) market has encountered a bottleneck in 2020. The sales growth of this product category has fallen sharply from an average of nearly 16% since 2010 to 3% last year.

During the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the CIS market has developed rapidly. It is estimated that the total global CIS sales will increase by 19% this year, reaching 22.8 billion U.S. dollars. This will be the tenth consecutive global sales record high since 2010 (as shown below) .

When the epidemic situation in the first half of 2020 has not been alleviated, businesses, schools, travel and most public activities around the world have been forced to stagnate, resulting in a sharp decline in CIS applications (including smartphones, cars and a wide range of embedded devices) . When the epidemic situation was in the second quarter of 2020, CIS market giant Sony once warned that its business environment was deteriorating, mainly due to the decline in global smartphone shipments.

However, CIS demand began to improve in the third quarter of last year. By the end of 2020, Sony CIS sales showed a slight increase of 0.3%, reaching nearly US$8.3 billion for the whole year. But this is the worst year for Sony's image sensor growth rate since 2006 (since that year, Sony stated that CMOS technology began to overwhelm CCD).

It is expected that the global economy will continue to resume growth by 2021, and CIS sales are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12.0%. The report pointed out that CIS sales in 2025 are expected to reach 33.6 billion U.S. dollars. Within five years, CIS’s total shipments are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14.9%, from 6.7 billion unit shipments in 2020 to 13.5 billion in 2025.

The report also shows that automobiles will become the fastest-growing application field of CIS in the next five years. By 2025, the compound annual growth rate of CIS used in automobiles will reach 33.8%, reaching US$5.1 billion.

The five-year growth forecast for CIS in other areas also includes: medical and scientific systems (26.4% compound annual growth rate to 1.8 billion US dollars); security (23.2% compound annual growth rate of 3.2 billion US dollars); industrial robots and Internet of Things (compound annual growth rate of 21.8%, reaching 3.5 billion US dollars).

It is estimated that in the next 5 years, mobile phones will be the largest terminal application field of CIS. CIS sales for mobile phones will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.3%, reaching 15.7 billion U.S. dollars by 2025, accounting for about 47% of the total market. In 2020, this figure is 61% ($11.6 billion).
