The TPS65983B is a USB Power Delivery (PD) controller that supports PD2.0 and PD3.0 specifications, Fast Role Swap, and Mode Configuration for Source (Host), Sink (Device), or Source-Sink .

The TPS65983 device serves as a power management integrated circuit with various functions such as power switches, thermal shutdown circuits, oscillators, and boot code capabilities. It features a Power-on-Reset circuit that monitors LDO_3V3 and issues an internal reset signal to the digital core, memory banks, and peripherals. The device also includes two independent oscillators for generating internal clock domains and clocks for different components during normal operation and low-power states. Additionally, the TPS65983 device has two I2C slave ports for system controller interaction, allowing dynamic power budgeting and reconfiguration based on the system's current state. The system controller can also update the device's firmware over I2C.

The TPS65983 B has a power supply path that can be powered from either VIN_3V3 or VBUS. In normal operation, current flows from VIN_3V3 to LDO_3V3 to power the core 3.3V circuitry and the 3.3V I/Os. A second LDO steps the voltage down from LDO_3V3 to LDO_1V8D and LDO_1V8A to power the 1.8V core digital circuitry and 1.8V analog circuits. If VIN_3V3 power is unavailable and power is available on VBUS, the TPS65983 B will be powered from VBUS. In this mode, the voltage on VBUS is stepped down through an LDO to LDO_3V3. Switch S1 in the power supply path diagram is unidirectional, indicating that no current will flow from LDO_3V3 to VIN_3V3 or VOUT_3V3. This situation serves as an indicator of a dead battery or no-battery condition . Additionally, the TPS65983 B supports a dead battery using the PP_EXT path, where specific connections are made to allow 5-V VBUS to enter the system through the PP_EXT path. The TPS65983 B will soft-start the PP_EXT path to comply with USB 2.0 inrush current requirements. To enable PD functionality, the TPS65983 B must boot the application firmware from the flash. Once VBUS is detected at 5V, the TPS65983 B will automatically start loading the application firmware from the flash and then communicate over PD to establish a power contract at the required 20V .
