The purpose of the AT17LV series FPGA Configuration EEPROMs is to provide an easy-to-use, cost-effective configuration memory for Field Programmable Gate Arrays. These devices use a simple serial-access procedure to configure one or more FPGA devices. They also support a write-protection mechanism within their programming mode. [2]

The AT17LV series Configurators can be programmed with industry-standard programmers, Atmel’s ATDH2200E Programming Kit, or Atmel’s ATDH2225 ISP Cable. The programming is done at VCC supply only, and programming super voltages are generated inside the chip. Additionally, the AT17LV series Configurators can be programmed by the Two-Wire serial bus.
