553

The LM317HVT, developed by Texas Instruments, is a high-performance, high-voltage linear voltage regulator. It builds upon the classic LM317 series, with enhanced voltage tolerance and integrated thermal and overload protection, making it ideal for industrial and high-voltage applications.

Key Features Recap

  • Wide Input Voltage Range: Supports up to 60V input, much higher than standard LDO regulators, suitable for high-voltage environments such as solar power systems, inverter pre-regulation, and electromechanical control units.

  • Adjustable Output Voltage: Easily set output voltage from 1.25V to 57V using two external resistors, offering flexibility for diverse circuit demands.

  • High Output Current: Delivers up to 1.5A, making it suitable for driving actuators, relays, audio amplifiers, LED arrays, and more.

  • Excellent Voltage Regulation: Features a typical line regulation of 0.01%/V and load regulation of 0.1%, ensuring a steady output despite power fluctuations.

  • Ripple Rejection: Offers 80dB typical ripple rejection, significantly reducing noise from the power source.

  • Robust Protection Mechanisms: Built-in overcurrent, thermal shutdown, and safe-area protection ensure reliability under abnormal conditions.

  • Thermal-Optimized Package: Comes in a TO-220-3 package, ideal for mounting heatsinks, enabling effective heat dissipation during continuous operation.

Usage Tips & Design Notes

  • Heat Dissipation: When operating at high voltage and full load, the regulator can get very hot. Always use a heatsink and thermal paste for safe operation.

  • Bypass Capacitors: Add 0.1µF and 1µF capacitors near the input pin to minimize high-frequency interference.

  • Precision Resistors: Use 1% or better tolerance resistors for voltage setting to maintain accuracy.

  • Maintain Dropout Margin: Ensure at least a 3V difference between input and output voltages for proper regulation and responsiveness.

Conclusion

The LM317HVT is not just an adjustable voltage regulator, but a reliable power solution for high-voltage, high-current, and precision-demanding applications. Its robust performance and comprehensive protections make it a go-to component across automation, embedded systems, and DC power supplies.
