It is widely speculated that at this time, on the eve of the release of iPhone 13, the shutdown of Murata MLCC's main factory may affect the production plan of iPhone and related products including Sony Play Station.
Limited impact on MLCC supply
Regarding the above speculation, Murata said that although the Takeyu office's shutdown will reduce the production volume of MLCC to a certain extent, the impact on performance is still being calculated, but the impact on the customer's supply commitment and time period will be minimized.
Murata further explained the reasons. On the one hand, although the Fukui Plant is Murata’s largest MLCC manufacturing plant, the Fukui Plant’s MLCC and related capacitor output does not account for most of the total due to the global MLCC supply demand and production capacity. Production capacity, supply, and manufacturing are provided by global manufacturing plants located in Izumo Murata in Shimane Prefecture, Murata in Wuxi, and Murata in the Philippines.
On the other hand, as the world's largest manufacturer of electronic components, Murata's component inventory reserves can still cope with the factory's short-term and medium-term production capacity consumption, so basically it has a very limited impact on customers' supply requirements.
Murata Fukui Factory has fully resumed work
On August 31, on the last day of the work stoppage, Murata also released a statement on the work stoppage on the official website of the cause of the epidemic. Nakajima Nakajima, Representative Director and President of Murata explained: Fukui Murata diagnosed the first case of COVID-19 infection on August 3, and was later diagnosed as an employee of a Murata cooperative company, not an employee of the company. In order to ensure the safety of all employees, Murata implemented PCR inspections for all employees from August 22 to August 31. As of August 29, the cumulative number of confirmed PCR results was 5,416, and the total number of confirmed cases was 124. Among them, 98 were confirmed to be infected from August 3 to 24. Since then, the number has increased and the cumulative total is 124 people. At present, the Murata Fukui Factory has fully resumed work, but it is limited to the group of employees who have a negative PCR test. At the same time, Kiki Nakashima also stated that after the resumption of work, Murata still plans to implement PCR inspections of about 1,000 people per day during the corresponding period.
Over 40% of the global MLCC market share
According to the "Wall Street Journal" report, in the latest smart phone, there are 1000+ tiny ceramic components hidden to control the flow of electricity. They are called MLCCs, or multilayer ceramic capacitors. Multilayer ceramic capacitors are made of ceramic materials. "Multilayer" refers to multiple layers of conductive and insulating materials that enable them to have ultra-high performance in a small space (such as the inside of a mobile phone). In the field of electric vehicles, the demand for MLCC per vehicle may be as high as tens of thousands.
According to foreign media statistics, Murata may account for more than 40% of the global MLCC market share, and it is the world's leading MLCC manufacturer and supplier. The Takebu Plant mainly produces MLCCs for smartphones and is Murata's main MLCC base in Japan.
