"16Gb LPDDR5 based on 1z has raised the industry to a new threshold, overcoming the main development barriers for DRAM expansion under advanced nodes." said Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics DRAM Products and Technology.

Samsung Pyeongtaek Line 2 covers an area of more than 128,900 square meters, equivalent to about 16 football fields, and is by far the world's largest semiconductor production line. The new Pyeongtaek production line will become the main manufacturing center for the most advanced semiconductor technology in the industry, providing the most DRAM and next-generation V-NAND and foundry solutions.

Based on today's most advanced (1z) process node, Samsung's new 16Gb LPDDR5 is the first mass-produced memory using EUV technology, and is the highest-speed and largest-capacity product in the mobile DRAM product sequence.

The new LPDDR5 has a speed of 6400Mb/s per second, which is about 16% faster than the 12Gb LPDDR5 (5500Mb/s) in most current flagship mobile devices. When made into a 16GB package, LPDDR5 can transmit about 10 5GB full HD movies or 51.2GB of data in one second.

Due to the first commercial use of the 1z process, the LPDDR5 package is 30% thinner than the previous generation, enabling 5G and multi-camera smartphones and foldable devices to pack more functions into a slim design. 16Gb LPDDR5 only needs 8 chips to build a 16GB package, while the previous generation product based on 1y requires 12 chips (8 12Gb chips and 4 8Gb chips) to provide the same capacity.

By delivering the first 1z-based 16GB LPDDR5 package to global smartphone manufacturers, Samsung plans to further strengthen its position in the flagship mobile device market throughout 2021. Samsung will also extend the use of LPDDR5 products to automotive applications and provide an extended operating temperature range to meet stringent safety and reliability standards in extreme environments.
